Skincare Routine | How I Cleared My Breakouts In 3 Weeks

In this blog, I’m sharing my skincare routine and exactly how I got rid of my breakouts in just three weeks!

I’ve recently had an outbreak of really bad skin, especially around my chin, jaw and in my T-zone. I started after I decided to take my training and nutrition more seriously and increased my training frequency & volume as well as my protein intake – especially my intake of dairy and whey protein.

Before & After

I want to be completely raw and honest and show you how bad the situation was without makeup. It’s never been this bad before and it was affecting my mood and confidence when I would go out without makeup.

Below I’m showing you the before & after photos. There are three weeks between the pictures and of course, there’s still some scarring left (especially the big red one on my chin is still healing) but the redness and the bumpy texture of my skin have improved dramatically.

Before (May 30th, 2019)

After (June 22nd, 2019)

As I’ve mentioned before (in Danish), my skin has always been prone to acne, but it’s been under control for many years due to my lifestyle, diet, skin care routine and a certain contraceptive pill my doctor prescribed that helps control acne. My skin has been almost completely clear for years, to the point where I wouldn’t feel a need to wear makeup to work.

However, a few months ago I decided to stop taking contraceptives for health reasons. At the same time, as mentioned, I increased my intake of protein and especially protein from dairy and whey. Since then, my skin problems exploded. It’s not only painful to have big swollen spots on my face, but it also makes me feel less confident when I’m not wearing makeup. I prefer going to work and the gym with a clean face, so really I don’t like it when feel like I have to cover my skin every day. My skin got very bumpy with big, swollen spots and because I can’t keep my dirty hands away they would get infected and turn into actual wounds.

To target my skin problems from the inside out I decided to cut out whey protein supplements completely and limit my dairy intake to one portion of greek yogurt or cottage cheese daily. I also started taking marine collagen tablets again. I’ve been making sure to manage my stress, get enough sleep and change my pillowcase frequently. Of course, all of this was on top of my targeted skincare routine that has also made a huge difference!
I’ve been following this routine for more than a year with some small changes and despite the recent state of my skin, it has had an amazing effect on my skin so I want to share it with you, too.

My Skincare Routine

My skin-type is acne prone but also dry, so my skincare routine has been carefully curated to give loads of moisture, clear impurities and protect against sun damage. I live in Dubai so SPF 50 for the face this is a necessity, but you should protect your skin against sun damage no matter where you live.

Morning:

My morning skincare routine starts with using a cleansing foam followed by a toner to close the pores. After cleanser and toner, I apply a hyaluronic serum to lock in moisture in my skin, followed by a moisturizing gel or cream. Currently, my favorite is Clinique’s Moisture Surge Skin Hydrator. After applying serum and cream I protect my skin with a mineral based SPF 50.

  1. Cleansing Foam: Rudolph Care Acai Cleansing Foam
  2. Toner: Sephora Instant Refreshing Toner
  3. Hyaluronic Acid Serum: This Works Morning Expert Hyaluronic Serum
  4. Gel/cream: Clinique Moisture Surge Skin Hydrator
  5. SPF: Murad City Skin SPF 50 I PA++++

Evening Routine:

For my evening routine, I double cleanse, so I start with an oil-based cleanser followed by my cleansing foam, then a toner. After toner, I use my favorite salicylic acid peel that I’ve mentioned before here on the blog. I let it dry for a few minutes before finishing with a facial oil. I like alternating between apricot kernel oil, jojoba oil, and rosehip oil.

A couple of times per week, I also do a deeper exfoliation using Rudolph Care Acai Facial Scrub Mask, an amazing gentle facial scrub that leaves my skin deeply moisturized as well as removes all the dead skin cells that are building up.

  1. Cleansing Oil: Sephora Oil-In-Foam Cleanser
  2. Cleansing Foam: Rudolph Care Acai Cleansing Foam
  3. Toner: Sephora Instant Refreshing Toner
  4. Salicylic Acid Peel: Pudderdåserne T-Zone Peeling
  5. Oil: Juhldahl Apricot Kernel Oil or Leven Rose Jojoba Oil

Some of my favorite products as mentioned above

Summary

To summarize in three steps, what I’ve done is:

  1. Cut out whey protein powder and reduce daily intake to only yogurt and cheese
  2. Introducing a daily collagen supplement
  3. Continue my extensive skincare routine with the main focus on gentle daily peels with salicylic acid and lots of moisture from cold pressed oils

I hope to see my skin improve even more over the coming weeks and months by keeping up this skin routine. I definitely feel the biggest change I’ve done is avoiding whey protein!

Has anyone else experienced breakouts from whey protein? Or do you have any tips for people struggling with acne?
